Manual wheelchairs — best for
Self-propelled manual chairs work well for users with enough upper-body strength to push themselves, or for chairs a caregiver will push (transport chairs, which are lighter and narrower). They fold for easy transport in most car trunks, need no charging, and generally cost less to purchase or rent.
Power wheelchairs — best for
Power (electric) wheelchairs suit users who can't self-propel a manual chair, need to cover longer distances independently, or navigate varied terrain. They typically require a documented in-home evaluation and prescription for insurance coverage, since they're a higher-cost item — Medicare and Medi-Cal review these more closely than manual chairs.
Power chairs are heavier and need vehicle-lift or ramp access for transport, plus regular battery charging.
What we help with
We fit both manual and power wheelchairs in-store or at home, verify insurance coverage before you commit, and can set up a rental if you're recovering from surgery and only need a chair temporarily.
